R.T.I.
They want to
stamp the ideas
from me, as if
I were metal and
senseless and coated
with black ink -

I feel as
though life has
made lemonade with me
for its lemons, quiet
sighs as the
last juice drips -

My mind is
now invaded by
the theories and interpretations
of others - course-based
necessary evils to
shape my thinking -

This restrictive world
where I grope
for understanding between
pointless tasks becomes a
neat, square slice of
claustrophobia; hemmed in,
my words penned

Up, pent up
as I must
reach for a larger
comprehension, level arguments and
abandon my opinion;
focus solely on
producing new conclusions.

That stands for Reading, Theory and Interpretation - the first of my two core English courses. It irritated me at first, but I'm more into it now, and this is in honour of my first coursework (for R.T.I.!) which was handed in yesterday. :D

I'm not sure I like the "Think how we say you should think!" idea in general but this depicts it well :D

It is depressing, but I guess they're not really trying to FORCE you to change; just appreciate that other people have shared your ideas in the past, and brought out totally new angles. If you think too much about the whole uni thing, it can make you very insecure. which is why I'm not.

Pleasingly deranged.

Wait until you have professors who tell ou what the "correct" interpretations and readings of literary works are.

I like the enjambent. However, the use of hyphens is irksome.

I enjoy this notion:

"I feel as
though life has
made lemonade with me"

Er.. thanks. I ought to warn you that I'm not a proper poet and don't try to be. Yes, I know... I'm working on the hyphen overuse...

Well, aren't you arch? "I enjoy this notion." :)

Pleasingly deranged.
:iconthecurse:
Yes. You should, technically, use dashes (two hyphens: --).

I offend? My apologies. I attempted to be tactful. I'm not particularly good at that particular mode of operation, though.

You're not my father.
:iconthecurse:
And, "arch?" I suppose it's my turn to be confused....

You're not my father.
:iconkrazyjellybean:
Haha, you don't offend. You do, however, surprise.

Why is it two hyphens if you don't mind me asking?

--
Pleasingly deranged.
:iconkrazyjellybean:
Some might call it pretentious, but I just find it funny. The way you phrase, that is. :) And I really don't mean to offend - I can be arch, but it's probably harder for me as I wasn't born English-speaking.

I could give you a really long grammatical explanation, but basically hyphens are used to join words while dashes are used to join phrases. "well-known" and "My mother--a jovial woman--knows her way around the kitchen."

The double hyphen is really just shorthand. The character is actually "—" or "U+2014 (8212) (Unicode)" or "& # 8 2 1 2; (HTML--no spaces)."

Of course, it's all a lot more complicated than that, but these things usually are.
